  • BANJA LUKA – Humanity is the most beautiful rhythm we can create together. With that in mind, Freshwave Festival is launching a voluntary blood donation campaign this year, inviting citizens to perform one of the noblest acts – donate blood and give someone a new chance at life. As a token of appreciation, the festival organizers will provide all eligible donors with a free pass valid for all three days of Freshwave Festival 2026.

The campaign will take place on August 3, at the Institute of Transfusion Medicine of the Republic of Srpska, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All adult volunteers who donate blood during the campaign will receive a complimentary three-day festival pass from the organizers as a gesture of gratitude.

The festival organizers emphasize that the purpose of this initiative goes far beyond the festival itself.

“We want to use the strength of the Freshwave community to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. If this campaign encourages even one person to donate blood for the first time, there is a good chance it will become a lifelong habit. That is the greatest value of this initiative,” the organizers said.

They also stress that blood donation must remain an entirely voluntary and humanitarian act.

“The festival pass is not payment for donated blood. It is simply a symbol of gratitude and a small incentive to encourage more people to take the first step and perform an act that could save someone’s life,” the organizers added.

Voluntary blood donation is of immeasurable importance to the healthcare system, as blood supplies save the lives of patients undergoing treatment for serious illnesses, victims of traffic accidents, people undergoing complex surgical procedures, and many others for whom transfusions are the only chance of recovery.

The organizers believe that young people can be drivers of positive social change and that music festivals can be much more than entertainment—they can serve as platforms for promoting solidarity and social responsibility.

    IMPORTANT

Any healthy person, male or female, between the ages of 18 and 65 may become a voluntary blood donor. People who are currently undergoing medical treatment or have an acute or chronic illness should not donate blood. Blood donation is not painful, does not create dependency, and is not harmful to your health.

The Law on Transfusion Medicine defines the eligibility criteria for voluntary blood donation, as well as the factors that may result in permanent or temporary deferral. These criteria are in place to protect the health of both blood donors and patients.

To be eligible to donate blood, you will undergo a medical examination at the transfusion service. It is recommended that donors:

    • be well-rested,
    • get a good night’s sleep,
    • avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before donating,
    • eat a light breakfast and drink plenty of fluids.

    Recommendation

If you consume very fatty or heavily seasoned food the day before or on the day of donation, saturated fats may remain in your bloodstream. As a result, the donated blood may contain excessive fat and may not be suitable for use in treating patients.

Everyone who meets the eligibility requirements is invited to join the campaign on August 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Institute of Transfusion Medicine of the Republic of Srpska, and through this humanitarian act give someone the most valuable gift of all—a chance at life.

It only takes a few minutes of your time, but it could mean a lifetime to someone else.
